This is not intended as being exhaustive, rather a guide to the nurses working night shift for Local Health NHS Trusts only & especially those working part time.

Night staff receive annual leave pro rated as they do not work 5 nights per week when they are full time. They work 4 nights if they are full time, therefore if they wish to take a week off work for example, they would take 4 nights, whereas a full time day person would need to take 5 days. The calculation (Whitley) used is the same for all staff and not just night workers.

If a nurse works a rota, the bank holidays are always added to the leave entitlement. Stat days are always incorporated as they don't really exist anymore.

Whole time equivalent (36 max) annual leave X the percentage of days employees work per week.

Part Time:

The reason that some part timers may think they are not receiving the extra stat day is because Local Health Trusts using Whitley scales always round up annual leave that is 0.5 and over or round down 0.4 and below. Therefore the extra day may not increase part time night nurses annual leave.

Example 1:

A night nurse works 3 shifts one week and 4 the following week.

             A/L as follows:

             A/L for 3 shifts over 5 yrs = 20 days.

             PR to 6 mths = 10 days.

             A/L for 4 shifts over 5 yrs = 26 days.

             PR to 6 mths = 13 days.

             Therefore, 10 days + 13 days = 23 days entitlement.

Example 2:

A nurse works 2 days/nights per week = 0.4 of the whole time equivalent.

35 x 0.4 = 14 days  prior to extra stat day being awarded

36 x 0.4 = 14.4  = 14 days with extra stat day.
