80 per cent in favour of pensions strike

Local Government UNISON members have voted Yes to strike action over pensions by an overwhelming majority.

Some 80 per cent supported strike action to demand fair treatment over pension rights in the Local Government Pension Scheme.
The union's Industrial Action committee today endorsed the first day of strike action on 28 March. This will be followed by a rolling programme of further selective action. UNISON will be joined by nine other unions in the action.

79.6 per cent voted Yes to industrial action on a 28 per cent turnout.

What could this mean for our NHS members?

The overall outcome could have severe consequences on the NHS pension scheme as it is next in line for reform. If the unions and members lose the campaign to reverse the proposals set out by Tony Blair's government to save the treasury from further embarrassment of inadequate pension investment and further short change the workforce, our pensions will be further under funded which means it will cost more to have less.

It is vital our local government colleagues win this campaign to stop any further pension downgrading. Failure will result in all NHS staff being consulted with the prospects of being balloted for strike action.
